Lydia Matthews is an Oxford-based sculptor working with portraits, figures and classical themes. Her former teaching career in ancient history at Oxford University informs a practice influenced by Greek and Roman sculpture. She models in wax and clay, developing forms that can be cast into finished sculptures while retaining the character of the original modelling. Commissions include portraits made from life or photographs, with sizes ranging from small pieces that fit in the hand to larger-than-life work. Her portfolio brings together contemporary portraiture and subjects drawn from classical history, showing an interest in both individual likeness and the expressive qualities of the human figure. Visitors can contact her through the website to discuss a commission.
