Tom Hare is a sculptor who uses greenwood, especially willow, to make large woven forms to commission. His approach developed from an early interest in throwing pots, then basket making and structures large enough to hold people, which became the basis for his sculptural techniques. A weekend course first introduced him to willow and its capacity for spontaneous shaping. His commissioned work often takes botanical details as its starting point, enlarging natural structures so that their forms can be explored at a different scale. Coppicing and close observation of nature connect the gathering of material with the design process, while the character of the willow helps determine the completed object. Sharing the making process and connecting with people are also central to his practice.
