About
To me, "handmade" is not a pursuit of perfection; it is an act of presence. It is a refusal of the digital in favor of the human. I call this "Actual Intelligence"—the physical manifestation of emotion, soul, and touch. This is what it looks like to create with feeling.
Working alone in my rural Minnesota studio, I carve entirely freehand from single blocks of wood. I select distinctive logs from fallen or salvaged hardwoods, choosing each piece for its inherent warmth and vitality. My process is a dialogue with the material, involving:
· Manual Artistry: Entirely freehand carving with no digital intervention.
· Elemental Finishes: The use of oils, dyes, paint, and fire to reveal the wood's primal essence.
My work is designed to connect at a visceral level, touching something deep within the viewer. Surpassing transient trends, these forms offer a classic contemporary beauty. They provide a calming presence that fits seamlessly into wide-ranging architectural styles, bringing the vitality of the natural world into the built environment.
