Jono Smart and Emily Stephen are a potter and woodturner who live and work at a renovated farmhouse and studio in the foothills of Scotland's Angus Glens. Their joint practice includes functional and sculptural work, with restrained forms intended to show the character of the materials. The pottery uses stoneware and matte glazes, and collections are released through online shop openings several times a year. They also consider commissions for installations and large collections, with occasional small restaurant or cafe orders. Their Studies exhibition in September 2019, made with artist Hayley McCrirrick, explored the relationship between clay, wood and linen. That project introduced a sustained focus on non-functional pieces, including clay panels developed through experiments with composition, surface and colour.
