Julia Crimmen makes contemporary ceramics in Cornwall, working from a garden studio inspired by the surrounding countryside. Her practice includes wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware for everyday use as well as small collectible animal sculptures. She develops pattern and texture with simplified stencils and wax, finishing the surfaces with glossy glazes and colours drawn from the Cornish coast and local hedgerows. Julia returned to education for a foundation diploma in Art and Design at Falmouth University in 2006, where an embossed vessel project grew from her life-drawing studies. She subsequently studied ceramics at Truro College and took intensive courses with Jack Doherty, Richard Phethean and Linda Bloomfield. Her work has been shown in galleries in Cornwall, Devon and Scotland, and she also sells directly through craft events and her own website.
