Jennifer McCurdy is a ceramic artist living on Martha's Vineyard whose work explores movement, structure and the interaction of light with porcelain. She throws vessels on the potter's wheel, alters their profiles and carves patterns into the clay while it is leather hard. The pieces are fired to cone 10, producing a non-porous, translucent body that allows cut surfaces and openings to influence light and shadow. Shells, seed pods and the balance between symmetry and asymmetry in nature inform her forms. Some vessels are finished with 23-carat gold leaf inside, extending her investigation of reflected light and curved surfaces. Her official resume records a BFA from Michigan State University and work in permanent collections including the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
