About
Matt Shlian is an artist and paper engineer based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, whose practice turns folded sheets into sculptural forms. He studied ceramics and print media, earning a BFA at Alfred University in 2002 and a master's degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006. His studio combines hand tools with AutoCAD and flatbed plotter cutters, using archival papers and glue to construct the work. He often begins with limits on folds, line lengths or angles, allowing unexpected results to redirect a piece as it develops. His paper engineering has also led to collaborations with University of Michigan scientists, connecting kinetic sculpture with scientific inquiry. Alongside his studio artworks, he accepts commissions and offers workshops and artist talks, while drawing inspiration from architecture, Islamic tile patterns, solar cell design and protein folding.
