William Mapan is a French artist whose practice connects abstract generative art with painting. He studied computer science and visual arts at Ecole Gobelins, where he also teaches creative coding and generative art. His process starts with hand-drawn sketches and visual research before he writes the algorithms that generate a work. These systems can produce machine drawings, oil paintings and layered mixed-media pieces, linking computational rules with physical gestures and materials. His series include Paysages Plausibles, Anticyclone, Sketchbook A and B, and Distance, the latter commissioned through LACMA's Art+Technology Lab. Across these projects he examines memory, personal identity and the traces of the hand within digital processes, drawing on Abstract Expressionist and Impressionist painting.
