Heather Shields is a textile designer and weaver based in Gourock on Scotland's west coast, specialising in contemporary cloth made from pure wool. She develops patterns with traditional and electronic looms, taking references from everyday objects, natural pattern and architecture. Her design process begins with collages of painted and found papers before colour combinations and structures are tested with selected yarns on the loom. A double-cloth construction weaves two layers simultaneously to give the fabrics thickness and warmth. Established in 2014, her practice combines hand weaving with small-batch manufacture at Drove Weaving in Langholm, Scotland. The studio's official biography describes an ongoing evaluation of materials and production methods to improve the environmental and ethical basis of its textiles.
